Although she is ushering in a new era in her career the influence of the Dead Petz is alive and well in “Malibu.” From the raw lyrics and subtle vocals to the sheer power of the understated production, you feel the meaning of the track — her pain and happiness are palpable. Throughout you can hear traces of “Karen Don’t Be Sad,” “I Get So Scared,” and “Lighter” to name a few.

Just after the 2-minute mark the Pop-superstar croons the words “I never would’ve believed you if three years ago you told me I’d be here writing this song” which might be one of the most powerful moments — referencing her own personal love life. Fans couldn’t be happier her and Liam are back together.

And here were are…next to you.
